Exercise Hacks & Life Hacks

This mobile home gem graced the hood with its presence, & is the first thing I saw on my barefoot morning walk.

Walking barefoot is itself a kind of hack, because I’m strengthening my ankles, tendons, & of course my soles.

I’m also using some breathing hacks. A small example – breathe OUT, counting steps under your breath. Most mornings I can manage 60 steps in one spell. It’s very mild altitude training.

More on breathing below ( NOT associate links ). James Nestor’s audiobook is in my all-time top 5.

The other hack featured in this video is mobile living.

This is a particularly good example of ‘van living’, which is taking off in New Zealand as house prices continue to claim more ( most, sometimes ) of a weekly budget.

Barefoot Misty Morning Exercise

Misty but not so cold ( 11 deg C ), & easy enough on the bare feet.

My burb is hilly, so Autumn & winter mists are common. Here’s a view South-west across to the airport.

I did some short bursts this morning. I’m slowly extending their length from a base of 25 strides to now 30, and sometimes 40-50.

The idea is to run without stress. Which I’m measuring by staying below a MAF* of 124. I overdid the last burst today, resulting in 19 seconds above MAF. No big deal, but a good yardstick.

* MAF = Maximum Aerobic Function. see philmaffetone.comfor more.

Cold Morning Sock Walk

Socks again against the 9-deg C cold on the routine morning exercise walk.

Maybe not strictly barefoot, but my toes don’t suffer this way.

A short walk this morning with a brewing coffee waiting at home.

Parkrun In Socks

Whangare Parkrun #493 barefoot. Well, almost.

After a 2-week break, I came back today with a 29m effort, comfortably inside my 30m00s goal.

The reason for the socks? Protect the toes, rather than the soles, from the early winter cold.

Looks pretty odd, but it works.

Despite radio reports of an Orange ( gasp! ) rain alert, not a drop fell this morning.

Slothful Sleep-in Shakeout Shuffle

A wee-hours wakeup led to a late morning start with an amble around familiar parts.

Here looking South-west across the Whangarei harbour.

These bad sleep habits of late are making worse the usual figurative cold feet about travel….

Which Is scheduled for late May. For now.

This is a day to wheel out the old adage “progress, not perfection”.

Pukenui – Meeting the Local Wildlife

A view of Pukenui Wharf on the routine morning exercise outing.

Some fishermen are already at play with the high tide, and I run across a local walking her dog.

Weather is good, and a repeat of yesterday’s afternoon swim is on the cards.

I’m back in the Far North – briefly – and this morning scene is probably the thing I’ll miss most.

Crowded Bus Lautoka to Nadi, Fiji

Mid-afternoon heat and an aisle seat next to a giant Fijian man made this trip less comfortable than most in Fiji.
Even so, at a cost of $3.50 FJD for the 30 km trip, I’m not complaining.
With stops along the way, the trip takes a little less than an hour.

Lautoka Bus Station Chaos

Pulling out of Lautoka bus station, Fiji.

A little chaotic for a first-timer.

The reggae music seems to be the default bus trip soundtrack here.
